Research & Evidence

Proof that it works —
and why it works.

elevatEDucation is built on established learning science and aligned to Florida's B.E.S.T. standards. The program targets 11th and 12th grade students who did not pass the Grade 10 reading assessment, helping them meet Florida's ELA graduation requirement through targeted intervention, retake preparation, and concordant-score pathways. Longitudinal outcome data and a transparent pilot-study reporting framework are available below.

Longitudinal Outcomes

From Grade 10 Reading to Graduation: The Intervention Window

Grade 10 reading proficiency is measured before the program begins. ELA graduation requirement fulfillment is measured after the program's 11th–12th grade intervention. The gap between them is the program's targeted intervention window.

Grade 10 Reading Proficiency is measured before the program begins (end of 10th grade). ELA Graduation Requirement Met is measured after the program's intervention (end of 12th grade). The gap between them — the program's targeted intervention window — has varied from 28 to 48 points across cohorts as Grade 10 reading proficiency has fluctuated. It represents the students who did not pass Grade 10 reading who were moved across the graduation finish line through retakes and concordant scores.

How to read this data: Grade 10 reading proficiency is measured at the end of 10th grade, before the program begins. ELA graduation requirement fulfillment is measured at the end of 12th grade, after the program's intervention. The gap between these two metrics — the program's intervention window — has varied from 28 to 48 points across cohorts. It represents the students who did not pass Grade 10 reading and were moved across the graduation finish line through the program's 11th–12th grade intervention, retake preparation, and concordant-score pathways. The 2019-20 year shows no Grade 10 reading data because the state waived testing requirements during COVID. The 2020-21 year was also affected by COVID recovery. The 2025-26 year is in progress and will be updated as results are released.

Florida B.E.S.T. Standards Alignment

Every question in the elevatEDucation bank is tagged with a specific B.E.S.T. standard code at the point of creation. The platform's adaptive engine draws from these mapped skill areas to fill each student's learning gaps — it does not drill every student through every standard.

Adaptive Delivery, Not a Fixed Sequence

The platform maintains 20 skill areas mapped to B.E.S.T. standard codes, but each student only encounters the standards tied to their diagnosed gaps. Teachers can pull any standard on demand; the adaptive engine handles the rest. This means every learner gets a personalized path to graduation readiness — without wasted time on skills they've already mastered. The full B.E.S.T. strand framework (including strands beyond the platform's current scope) is in the downloadable alignment document below.

Pedagogical Research Basis

The platform is grounded in six established bodies of learning-science research.

Item Response Theory (IRT)

Questions are matched to each student's ability using a Rasch 1PL model. The platform maintains a theta score per skill, updated after every attempt, maximizing the statistical information each question provides.

Lord (1980)Wainer et al. (2000)van der Linden & Glas (2010)

Spaced Retrieval Practice

No-repeat logic ensures every question is a fresh retrieval event, not recognition. The testing effect is maximized through distributed practice across sessions.

Roediger & Karpicke (2006)Cepeda et al. (2006)

Immediate Feedback

Server-side grading delivers the correct answer and explanation immediately after submission, providing the timely corrective feedback research identifies as critical for learning.

Hattie & Timperley (2007)Bangert-Drowns et al. (1991)

Mastery Learning

A diagnostic-to-mastery cycle (PM1, PM2, PM3) mirrors Florida's FAST progress-monitoring structure. Lessons are generated against each student's weakest skills first.

Pilot Study Reporting Framework

How elevatEDucation documents and reports learning outcomes, aligned with ESSA evidence tiers.

Study Design

Interrupted time series design tracking Grade 10 reading proficiency (pre-program baseline) and ELA graduation requirement fulfillment (post-program outcome) across multiple cohorts. The program targets 11th and 12th grade students who did not pass the Grade 10 reading assessment, helping them meet the requirement through retakes and concordant scores. Over 1,000 students across multiple cohorts are included in the longitudinal dataset, with externally validated state assessment scores (FAST, SAT, ACT, CLT) as primary outcome measures.

ESSA Evidence Tiers

Current Evidence Level

Tier 3 — Promising Evidence

The longitudinal data demonstrates that the program's partner school consistently moves students from varying Grade 10 reading proficiency baselines to a 98% ELA graduation requirement fulfillment rate, with intervention windows of 28 to 48 points across cohorts during 11th and 12th grade. This meets ESSA Tier 3 criteria for Promising Evidence.

Tier 4Demonstrates a Rationale

Met — pedagogical model grounded in established learning science (IRT, retrieval practice, mastery learning)

Tier 3Promising EvidenceCurrent

Current level — longitudinal data showing intervention windows of 28 to 48 points from Grade 10 reading baseline to graduation requirement fulfillment across multiple cohorts

Tier 2Moderate Evidence

Achievable — a quasi-experimental design comparing program participants against matched non-participants on concordant-score attainment and time to requirement fulfillment

Tier 1Strong Evidence

Achievable — a randomized controlled trial using the platform's classroom-level assignment features

Reporting Capabilities

  • Automated (weekly): Class-level mastery snapshots and intervention alerts emailed to teachers via scheduled workflow
  • On-demand: School-level and district-level progress reports, generated by administrators from their dashboards as needed
  • On-demand: Individual student progress reports for parents, generated by teachers or parents from the Parent Portal
  • Pilot study: Full pre/post analysis and graduation outcome reports compiled at the end of each study period
